ENAIRE will increase its investment by 38.2% in 2022, with safety, efficiency and sustainability as its main goals
ENAIRE, Spain's national air traffic manager, has included an investment of 168.7 million euros in Spain's Budget Act for 2022. This amount represents an increase in the planned investment of 38.2% compared to the investment in 2021, which was 122.1 million euros.
ENAIRE is a state-owned company that functions as an independent entity, meaning it relies on its own income - which it receives from air navigation charges and the revenue obtained from providing air navigation services at airports - to guarantee a critical service for the country.
Specifically, ENAIRE expects operating income in 2022 to increase by 57% and exceed 220.6 million euros, going from 387.2 million in 2021 to 607.8 million in 2022. Operating expenses will also increase, by 7.1%, going from 751.3 million in 2021 to 804.3 million in 2022.
Spain's national air traffic manager will invest 168.7 million euros
"After a very difficult 2020 due to the standstill in the aviation industry caused by COVID-19, and a 2021 in which we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, ENAIRE's expectations for 2022 provide room for optimism in terms of the recovery that the aviation sector has been experiencing in recent months". The CEO of ENAIRE, Angel Luis Arias, said that the organisation "will receive a total of 57 million euros next year from the European recovery and resilience funds (Next Generation, CEF and Horizon), which will go toward R&D and to the implementation of ENAIRE's Strategic Plan, its 2025 Flight Plan".
This investment will be key to digitising Spanish skies, helping to make them safer, more sustainable, more efficient and more connected, thus facilitating the construction of the Single European Sky.
This investment will also provide a significant boost to the development of the U-Space platform, which will allow conventional aviation to exist alongside drones, air taxis and everything related to Urban Air Mobility.
In addition, this investment will help to improve air traffic management operations by modernising air navigation systems through the digitisation and automation of systems, new communications networks and solutions, as well as by promoting technology that allows the use of satellite technology in air navigation services and enhances resilience in air transport. It will also pave the way for increased environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
This important investment effort underscores ENAIRE's commitment to become a driving force for the aviation sector's recovery and for the digital transformation of the economy.
