ENAIRE celebrates World Environment Day with events and initiatives that reinforce its commitment to sustainability
ENAIRE, Spain's air navigation service provider, is celebrating World Environment Day today with events and initiatives that reinforce its commitment to sustainability.
As an entity committed to the environment, ENAIRE has an environmental sustainability strategy called Green Sky in its strategic plan, the 2025 Flight Plan.
More efficient routes have avoided 87,000 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 emissions and saved 27,600 tonnes of fuel in two years
Green Sky focuses its efforts on three main areas of action that reflect United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 7, 11, 13 and 15: reducing atmospheric emissions (Fly Clean), attenuating noise levels in and around Spanish airports (Fly Quiet) and improving the environmental management of its own centres and facilities throughout the country (Eco-ENAIRE)
This improvement in operational management promoted by ENAIRE has resulted in a route network whose efficiency rose by 10% in 2022 compared to 2019, and by 36% versus 2012. This yielded significant savings between 2021 and 2022: 2.5 million nautical miles not flown, equivalent to 116 trips around the Earth; 87,000 tonnes of CO2 not emitted into the atmosphere and 27,600 tonnes of fuel saved, worth 13.5 million euros.
In 2021 and 2022, 36% of the approaches authorised by ENAIRE at large airports were continuous descent approaches (more efficient and sustainable), versus a European average of 18% in 2021 and 15% in 2022.
In addition, environmentally meaningful projects were carried out, such as AMBAR (Madrid) and BRAIN II (Barcelona), which modernised the arrival and departure manoeuvres at various airports in Spain.
In 2022, EUROCONTROL confirmed the leadership of Spanish airports in authorising these continuous descents, managed by ENAIRE's air traffic controllers.
Finally, ECO-ENAIRE plans to undertake energy efficiency and self-supply measures involving renewable energies, mainly by installing solar panels to supply its main facilities, replacing traditional lights with LED lighting, which is much more efficient, and upgrading its vehicle fleet with hybrid or electric vehicles, as well as by researching other possible alternative energy sources.
Since 2015, the emissions avoided have been equivalent to almost 110,000 tonnes of CO2, and we are firmly committed to continuing to work for a better and more sustainable planet.
Activities at ENAIRE
ENAIRE is currently engaged in initiatives to make its professionals more aware of sustainability, which it is doing by disseminating simple ideas on how to make offices more environmentally efficient (see attached file) and through specific events on recycling and how to reduce the footprint of our activity on the environment.
About ENAIRE
ENAIRE is the air navigation service provider in Spain.
As a company of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, it provides en route control services for all flights and overflights from five control centres in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Gran Canaria and Palma, as well as approach services to every airport in the country.
In addition, 46 airports receive ENAIRE's communication, navigation and surveillance services, and 21 of them, including the country's busiest airports, rely on its aerodrome control services.
ENAIRE is Europe's fourth largest air traffic manager and participates in the A6 Alliance, a coalition of air navigation providers responsible for over 80% of European air traffic, and which is seeking to modernise the air traffic management system. It is also a member of other international alliances promoting the Single European sky, such as SESAR Joint Undertaking, SESAR Deployment Manager, iTEC, CANSO and ICAO.
ENAIRE, as the agency designated by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda to implement the U-Space system in Spain will, through its digital platform, provide the Common Information Services (CIS), which are essential to facilitate U-space services to drones and Urban Air Mobility in cooperation with local air traffic services, so that all types of aircraft can fly safely in the same airspace.
ENAIRE has received the highest score in Europe on the aviation safety key performance indicator. It has also been awarded the EFQM 500 Seal for its safe, efficient, innovative and sustainable management of air navigation services.
