ENAIRE managed nearly 200,000 flights in May, 6.5% more than in 2022

ENAIRE, Spain's air navigation service provider, managed nearly 200,000 flights (196,276) in May, 6.5% more than in the same month in 2022. Of those, 113,261 were international (+5.1%), 38,608 were domestic (+4.9%), and 44,407 were overflights (which do not land at or depart from a Spanish airport) (+11.9%).

These figures show that Spain's contribution to European air traffic in May was 21%.

All ENAIRE control centres registered an increase in the number of flights managed: Seville recorded 43,325 flights (8.5%); Barcelona, 96,805 (7.0%); Canary Islands, 28,676 (6.0%); Madrid, 102,974 (5.8%), and Palma, 36,770 (1.4%).

A comparison of May 2023 with the same month in 2019, a record year for flights managed by ENAIRE before the pandemic, shows a 1.4% increase.

Cumulative data for 2023

In the first five months of the year, ENAIRE managed over 800,000 flights (812,276), 16.3% more than in the same period in 2022.

International flights from January to May (445,980) rose by 13.2%, domestic (174,424) by 12.2% and overflights (191,872) by 28.8%.

By control centre, the cumulative figures for Seville stand out, with 187,606 flights managed, a 21.7% increase; Barcelona, with 360,012, 17.2% more, and Madrid, with 462,804, 15.6% more.

A comparison between the first five months of 2023 and the same period in 2019 shows a drop of 0.01%.

ENAIRE drives the aviation sector

To prop up the aviation sector, ENAIRE's en route rates for 2023 remain well below the rates prior to the pandemic (2019), 11% lower in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands and 8% lower in the Canary Islands.

Moreover, compared to the average fees of Europe's four largest air navigation service providers, ENAIRE's rates are 28% cheaper in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands and 40% cheaper in the Canary Islands.

International leader in safety

As part of the organisation's successive strategic plans, the 2020 Flight Plan and the 2025 Flight Plan, safety and sustainability in the management of flights were prioritised, as was the quality of its services.

As a result, ENAIRE and CRIDA, its research, development and innovation subsidiary, received the 2021 CANSO Global Air Safety Award at the 2022 World ATM Congress, along with congratulations from the European Network Manager (EUROCONTROL) for the quality of its services in the first year of record traffic (2022) following the pandemic.

ENAIRE has also been the European leader in the efficiency of its Safety Management System since 2019, achieving and maintaining the highest possible result since 2020 (100%).
