The ENAIRE Foundation presents Ciria. Painting, memory and time at the Naves de Gamazo, and the Conciencia2 showing, which renews the permanent exhibition
Today, the ENAIRE Foundation presented the two exhibitions that open this year's cultural programme at the Naves de Gamazo. On the one hand is Ciria. Painting, memory and time, which delves in the most recent work of this artist, who has been in the ENAIRE Collection since 1995, and on the other is the renewed permanent collection with the Conciencia2 showing, which gathers together a selection of photographs from the ENAIRE Collection.
The presentation of the exhibitions was attended by the Government Representative in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego; the President of the Port Authority, César Díaz; the Director General of Culture and Heritage, Juan Antonio González; as well as the artist José Manuel Ciria and the exhibition curator, Marcos Ricardo Barnatán.
Exhibition Ciria. Painting, memory and time
José Manuel Ciria (Manchester, 1960) is regarded as one of the leading representatives of abstract expressionism and one of Spain's most internationally accomplished artists. The exhibition, which will be open through 2 June, will take a closer look at the most recent work of this artist, who has been represented in the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art since 1995.
Ciria is a painter and his life is painting. After many years of work and research, he has explored new forms of expression and created what he calls “anti-painting” (performances, sculptural paintings, collages, etc.), but everything comes back around to painting, as if it were the only truth.
The more than 30 works that make up the exhibition are an homage to painting. While Ciria initially took a figurative approach to paint, he settled on abstraction as the path of truth, as an “eternal” struggle between the chaos of expression and the order of geometry. And it is in this profound struggle that Ciria finds a balance and develops his most personal and recognised language.
Now in the 21st century, José Manuel Ciria embraces abstract painting, gives it expression, nourishes it with contemporary concerns and beckons us, through his works, to the most current representation of today's contemporary art, created with more technological artistic procedures typical of our time. In this exhibition, repetition in his work is the search within his subconscious, escaping from the known and familiar, in a courageous approach to the inner workings of his creativity, seeking to explore his own limits.
The permanent collection of the Naves de Gamazo will be renewed with the showing Conciencia2, a selection of photographs by the authors that fill the ENAIRE Collection
Ciria and the Naves de Gamazo
On a visit to Santander, Ciria met up with his friend Marcos Ricardo Barnatán, an Argentine-Hispanic writer, poet and critic who lives in Santander and who excitedly told him about a recently opened art centre in the city. Ciria visited the Naves de Gamazo, was excited by the space and learned that it is a project of the ENAIRE Foundation, with which he has had artistic ties for almost 30 years.
Ciria and Marcos Ricardo Barnatán, the curator of the exhibition, presented to the Foundation a “tailor-made“ project inspired by the space that takes an in-depth look at the author's career and displays unpublished works from his latest period, some of them made specifically for the Naves de Gamazo.
The result, which we will be able to enjoy in the Naves de Gamazo from 29 February, is the 32 works that make up Ciria. Painting, memory and time, an exhibition that, in keeping with one of the areas of activity of the ENAIRE Foundation at its art centre, invites us to delve into the work of an artist in the ENAIRE Collection.
The ENAIRE Foundation, in its commitment to familiarise the public with the artists' works, has added to the exhibition a series of audios with explanations from the author that can be downloaded via the QR codes on the signs.

The permanent collection is renewed with the exhibition Conciencia2
The Conciencia2 exhibition brings together a selection of 15 photographs from the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art. Through artistic beauty, this exhibition aims to provide novel insights into the environmental, social and ethical challenges we face, and which are reflected in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Art undoubtedly plays a very important role in raising awareness in society. The approach of art, whether through photography or any other artistic manifestation, always represents an exercise in sensitivity in response to the main current problems and challenges.
In recent years, the artists who have participated annually in the ENAIRE Foundation Photography Award, some of whose images can be seen in this exhibition, have shifted their increasingly intense and direct focus towards the great challenges that are contributing to the deterioration of the planet and the alienation of human beings.
Works by Santiago Sierra, Miguel Ángel Tornero, María Primo, Eduardo Nave, Jorge Fuencaliente, Estela de Castro and others will be featured at this exhibition, with which the ENAIRE Foundation renews the cultural programme of the Naves de Gamazo, and which will be on display throughout the year.

About ENAIRE Foundation
Is a cultural institution of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility that, in addition to managing, preserving and exhibiting the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art, engages in a comprehensive annual programme of activities that focus on aeronautical art and culture. Notably, it is one of the institutions that currently provides the most support to photography through its annual prizes - which have become a benchmark for professional photographers - and by hosting exhibits.
It is the only foundation in Spain that combines the two seemingly disparate themes of art and aeronautical culture, bringing them together by undertaking a programme of activities that promote the study, research, knowledge and dissemination of aeronautical culture, integrating history and modernity to raise awareness of the world of aviation in our country.
The Naves de Gamazo are the first permanent home of the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art, an example of collaboration between government agencies that was made possible thanks to the partnership and joint efforts of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the Government of Cantabria, through the Office for Culture, Tourism and Sport, and the Port Authority of Santander, which share the operating expenses of the centre in order to ensure the present and future viability of this cultural project.
