ENAIRE managed 415,617 flights in the first half of the year, 59% less as a result of the pandemic
ENAIRE managed a total of 415,617 flights in the first half of the year, 59.2% less than in the same period last year. This is due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had the following impact, by month, on the air traffic managed by ENAIRE:
In June, domestic traffic fell 89.7%, below the 93.8% recorded in May, compared to the same months in 2019. This recovering trend was especially evident for domestic flights, which totalled 98,731 in the first six months as a whole, a 53.2% decrease.
International flights in H1 totalled 219,512, 62.5% lower, and overflights (which do not depart from or arrive at a Spanish airport) 97,374, 56.1% lower.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused and continues to cause a reduction in global, European and domestic traffic that is without precedent in the history of air transport. Containing the spread and ensuring people's health take precedence over any other priority.
As a result, these decreases continue to be generalised at every ENAIRE control centre: Palma (-73.2% and 37,527 flights), Barcelona (-63.4% and 165,681), Madrid (-56.7% and 249,319), Seville (-54.8% and 92,073) and Canary Islands (-51% and 87,102).
Figures for June
ENAIRE managed 21,142 flights in June (-89.7%), of which 8,260 were international flights (-93.4%), 8,033 domestic (-79.3%) and 4,849 overflights (-88.5%).
All ENAIRE control centres reported cumulative drops, with the Canary Islands and Seville centres reporting the lowest decreases.
Recovery plan for air navigation services
ENAIRE is developing a plan to recover air navigation services based on traffic growth forecasts received from the Manager of the European Network, and in full cooperation with said European agency, in order to standardise operational criteria with a view to returning to pre-pandemic flight levels.
This Plan provides for a recovery of air traffic control operations in stages based on the expected demand and scheduling criteria in order to efficiently use the available resources.
Delayed collection of route charges from airlines
Mindful of the historically exceptional nature of the situation we are experiencing, ENAIRE is exercising responsibility and solidarity by deferring the collection of the route fees it charges airlines until November.
