ENAIRE to renew VOR/DME navaid in Salamanca
Investment exceeds €800,000
ENAIRE, the air navigation manager in Spain, is set to renew a new VOR/DME navaid that provides guidance information and position data to aircraft on approach to Salamanca Airport.
The new system will replace the VOR/DME equipment that had been operative at the airport with newer, next-generation devices. Alternative navigation aid procedures will be employed while the system is down to prevent negative impacts on airport operations. The replacement project has a 10-month execution time and the system is expected to be out of service for around five months.

A total of €812,980.48 has been invested in the facility as part of the ENAIRE navaid renewal plan which will make it possible to ensure airport manoeuvres going forward.
Pilots draw on the VOR/DME equipment to perform landing approach and take-off procedures at the airport.
The new navaid is located off-site, around seven kilometres from the airport in the town of Aldearrubia.
Navaids
Navaids are systems that use radio signals to provide aircraft with data on their position and guidance signals in their different flight phases. The signals provide aircraft with onboard navigation information to facilitate operations between different airports.
VOR (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range) devices issue a signal that lets aircraft know their angular position with respect to the navaid. The other navaid component, called DME (Distance Measurement Equipment), provides information on the distance between the aircraft and the ground equipment. This means the aircraft can tune into the navaid to know its position and the direction it has to fly in to begin its final approach.
