One of ENAIRE’s priorities is to ensure that the air navigation system evolves in a way that meets service needs and European regulatory requirements. To this end, it optimises aeronautical communications systems by modernising infrastructures and the associated procedures.
Communications
ENAIRE is a European and global leader in the digitisation of voice communications systems, through the progressive implementation of a new methodology based on the Internet Protocol (IP) in all en-route/TMA control centres and all the control towers it operates.
This technological step forward increases operational capacity and safety, and improves the efficiency of the system’s technical operation.
ENAIRE operates a network of ground/air communications centres that provide radio coverage across most of the airspace, as well as a node architecture of the Air Navigation Data Network (REDAN) for ground/ground voice and data communications required by air navigation applications. These systems serve all tower and approach control positions, as well as en-route control positions, supporting all data communications involved in air traffic management.
In addition, ENAIRE manages, both technically and operationally, the Aeronautical Messaging Communications System (CRAMI), the single entry-exit point for aeronautical information (flight plans, aeronautical and meteorological information).
Finally, with regard to new communications services in the short and medium term, ENAIRE is actively involved in the project to deploy digital data link technology (Datalink), which will enhance the safety of pilot-controller transmissions and enable smoother operations.
With all this infrastructure and the personnel responsible for its installation and maintenance, ENAIRE provides the following communications services:
- Data communications services for air navigation applications and operational voice services for air traffic management.
- Renewal processes for ground/air and ground/ground communications equipment and systems, including the voice communications systems of area control centres (ACC) and control towers.
- Projects to upgrade air navigation data networks.
- Verification and assurance of ground-air communications coverage and management of the radio spectrum.
- Projects to upgrade ATIS/VOLMET meteorological information systems.
- Activities related to the data link service.
